Appel graduated from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1960. Since then, he has trained more than 200 neurologists, many of whom went on to become chair of their own departments. Dr. Warren Strittmatter is one example. He is professor of medicine and chief of neurology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. He specializes in Alzheimer's. "Stan taught me many lessons," Strittmatter said. "He is a true physician-scientist who sets a high standard for critical thinking, and for keeping a sharp focus on a single and important clinical problem. "He devotes his energies to ALS, helping patients and families, developing multi-disciplinary teams to care for these patients and initiating clinical trials."
